Title Electric Bike Report | Electric Bike, Ebikes, Electric Bicycles, E Bike, Reviews | Electric Bike Reviews, News, and Information; plus e-bike riding and maintenance tips!
Description After many miles of testing the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive it has proven to be a powerful step-thru with a comfortable ride feel. This class 2 electric bike has some serious kick with a 750 watt Bafang rear hub motor and impressive range from the 48V 11.6ah lithium battery. While it has performance capabilities it also has an easy and fun ride feel with the step-thru frame, upright handlebars, and comfortable 3" wide tires. The EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive is priced at $2,199 with free shipping & other incentives. In this second part of the full review you will get an idea of the ride characteristics, range test results, pros, cons, and overall thoughts on this electric bike. Make sure you check out part 1 of this review with large pictures and specifications to get a detailed look at this e-bike. What you can expect from the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive: To get acquainted with the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive, checkout this video: Riding the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive: Overall there are some characteristics of the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive that really stand out when riding this eBike. To summarize they are: Powerful ride from a 750 watt rear hub motor with pedal assist & throttle Comfortable upright position and stable 3" wide tires Easy get on and off step-thru frame The Look & Feel of the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive Like the EVELO Aurora Limited that was tested recently, the Aurora Hub-Drive shares a similar futuristic look with its hydroformed aluminum frame. The Aurora frames blend in a lot of features to create a comfortable ride, balanced feel, and stylish look. One of the main design highlights is the centered and relatively low battery location on the down tube of the frame. This is an ideal location for a balanced feel when picking the bike up and it also helps with how the bike handles when cornering. Below the battery is the step-thru area that is about 22" above the ground. The low step-thru makes it easy to get on and off the bike without swinging your leg over a typical top tube. The low step-thru area is comprised of a gusset that reinforces the down tube to seat tube connection. Additional reinforcing gussets are found in many other areas of the frame and add a bit of style to the Aurora Hub-Drive. For instance, the rear rack connection to the seat tube and seat stays has a cool look while providing a solid connection. Another design highlight is the use of 26" x 3" wide Innova balloon style tires that provide a very comfortable ride and a bold look. Because these tires have such large air volume they can absorb a lot of the bumps and cracks in the road when they are run at the lower air pressure range. EVELO has recommendations of tire pressure ranges based on rider weight. These wide tires also give the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive a very stable feel because they have a large tread patch that contacts the ground. Active suspension is provided by a Suntour XCM suspension fork with 4" of travel and it does a good job of taking the edge off of rough roads. On the right side of the fork is a spring rate adjustment dial for setting the fork to your weight and riding style. If you are riding on smooth roads there is a lockout dial that provides a more efficient ride. It prevents the fork from moving up and down when you are standing out of the saddle and pedaling hard. It's very easy to rotate the dial to activate the suspension when its needed. I found the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive to be very comfortable with the front suspension fork and wide balloon style tires. If you want to add some additional rear suspension then a suspension seat post is an economical way to further smooth out the road. Here is a guide to suspension seat posts. The ride position of the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive is upright and very comfortable, similar to a beach cruiser ride feel. The swept back handlebars place the lock-on grips in a very comfortable position. A high rise stem provides the very upright ride position that is comfortable and it is also helpful for being able to see everything around you. The EVELO saddle has a comfortable mid width profile while still being narrow enough for efficient pedaling. EVELO also offers their "Perfect Seat" Guarantee which is very unique! "If you find another seat that you prefer at a local shop, purchase it, and we will reimburse you up to $40! This is just one of the ways we strive to ensure that you are 100% comfortable and satisfied with your bike." Now let's take a look at the drive system on the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive. A 750 watt (1,000 watts peak power) Bafang rear hub motor provides assist up to 20mph with pedal assist and/or throttle. There is an off-road mode that provides pedal assist up to 25 mph. There are 5 different levels of pedal assist in addition to the thumb throttle option, making the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive a Class 2 electric bike (except off-road mode). The 750 watt Bafang geared rear hub motor definitely provides a powerful ride in the higher assist levels and/or throttle. It can get up to speed quickly and it maintains its speed well on moderately steep hills. Pedal assist levels 4 and 5 provide the high performance ride for quicker acceleration and strong hill climbing. Level 3 still has a performance feel but it not as sporty as 4 & 5 which helps to extend the range. Levels 1 & 2 are an easy going assist style for casually cruising the neighborhood or for when riding in crowded areas. On the left side of the handlebar is the thumb throttle that can add a boost of power to the lower pedal assist levels or it can be used as pure throttle without pedaling. The throttle power can be easily adjusted to provide exactly the amount of assist that you want. Another feature is the walk assist that helps with walking the bike up stairs or up a steep hill. Walk mode moves the bike at about 2 mph and it is activated by holding the "-" button on the control pad for a few seconds. Like most geared hub motors the Bafang does create a whirring noise. It is in the medium range compared to other eBike motors. The mechanical drivetrain is made up of a 7 speed Shimano system. The gear range works well for accelerating from a stop up to 20 mph and it has a low enough gear ratio for climbing steeper hills well. A Shimano Tourney derailleur shifts through the 7 speed Shimano cogset and the Shimano RevoShift grip shifter has a light action feel for quick and easy shifting. Next up is a closer look at the 48V 11.6ah (557 watt hours of capacity) lithium battery that is built into the downtube of the frame. This high capacity battery powers the motor in addition to the front and rear lights. It also offers a USB port for charging phones and other USB chargeable devices. There is also a USB charging port under the display on the handlebar. As mentioned before, the low and centered location of the battery is ideal for the balance and handling of the bike. In addition, the integration of the battery into the frame creates a clean look. Removing the battery is accomplished by unlocking it with one of the supplied keys (3 supplied) and rotating it to the left side of the bike. The battery can be charged on or off the bike and it takes 4 to 6 hours to fully charge an empty battery. Now let's take a look at the color display on the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive. In the center of the handlebar is the color LCD display that provides information on: Time Battery level Speed, average speed, max speed Odometer, trip distance Estimated range based on battery level & pedal assist level Pedal assist mode Watts the motor is providing Calories It is easy to see the important info on the display at a quick glance and the bit of color is a nice touch of style. Keeping the speed in check is handled by the Tektro Aries mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors front and rear. These mechanical disc brakes provide a good bit of power and it is easy to modulate the amount of power you are using. Each brake lever has a sensor that will stop the motor assist when either brake is engaged. One item that would be nice to have on the brake levers is a reach adjustment to fit smaller hand sizes. Rounding out the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive is a good assortment of stock accessories. There are the front and rear LED lights that run off of the eBike battery so you don't have to worry about charging separate batteries for them. The front LED light does a good job of lighting up the road and it also works well for being seen on the road. The rear light has a solid light mode for being seen in addition to a brake light. The brake light illuminates when either brake is engaged, much like a car. Finally there is a kickstand mounted to the back of the frame and the length is adjustable so that you can set it to your preferred tilt. EVELO offers many other accessory options at their website as well. Okay, let's see how the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive did out on the open road! EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive Range Test Results: Here is the real world information on how the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive electric bike performed on a riding circuit that includes hills, flats, traffic, wind (when available) etc. While testing these bikes I like to put them through the toughest conditions to see where their bottom line is in regards to range and speed. I tested the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive in the highest pedal assist level (Level 5) with average pedaling on paved roads. Range: As you can see from the GPS info that I recorded, the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive traveled 28 miles and did a total elevation gain of nearly 2,200 ft. Considering that I weigh 190 lbs and I pedaled at an average pace this is good range for a 48 Volt 11.6 ah battery pack (557 Watt Hours) with a 750 watt motor assisting up to 20 mph. Watt hours are the total energy in a battery pack and it is based on the volts x amp hours of a pack. This is a way to compare the size of the "gas tank" of electric bikes. Please keep in mind that if you pedal more, weigh less than me, ride slower and/or you use the bike in terrain that is not as hilly you will get more range. These results are from tough testing. Speed: The EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive will assist up to 20 mph with pedal assist and/or throttle which makes this a Class 2 electric bike. There is an off-road mode that provides pedal assist up to 25 mph. Weight: The EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive tips the scales at 66.4 pounds which is on the heavier side for an electric bike. Removing the 7.3 pound battery brings it down to 59.1 pounds which makes it a little easier to load onto a car rack. The weight distribution of the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive is pretty good because the battery is low and centered on the bike while the rear hub motor makes it just slightly back heavy. Pros: Performance Capabilities: The 750 watt Bafang geared hub motor can provide a zippy performance ride feel in the higher assist levels and/or throttle. The Aurora Hub-Drive can accelerate quickly and it climb hills well. It also has an easy going ride style in the lower assist levels for casually cruising the neighborhood. Easy Going & Fun: The upright ride position with the 3" wide tires give the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive a very comfortable and stable ride feel that is similar to a classic beach cruiser. It's also easy to get on and off with the low step-thru frame design. Economical: At $2,199 with free shipping & other incentives, the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive offers a lot of features with a fun and comfortable ride. Cons: Heavier: At 66.4 pounds this is on the heavier side of electric bikes. Removing the battery helps a little by bringing the weight down to 59.1 pounds. Motor Noise: Like most geared hub motors the Bafang does create a whirring noise. It is in the medium range compared to other eBike motors. Brake Lever Reach: One item that would be nice to have on the brake levers is a reach adjustment to fit smaller hand sizes. Conclusion: Overall the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive blends high performance capabilities with a fun and comfortable ride style at an affordable price. The 750 watt Bafang gear hub motor has a wide range of power from easy going cruising to quick acceleration and solid hill climbing capabilities. With the 48V 11.6ah lithium battery the EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive can also go the distance. The easy going and comfortable ride style is definitely a highlight with the upright handlebars, stable 3" wide tires, and 4" travel suspension fork. The EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive is priced at $2,199 with the following incentives. They offer a 10 day at home trial period, free shipping in the continental US, 0% financing (if you qualify), 4 year/20,000 mile warranty, and support for service and repairs. Plus they have their "Perfect Seat Guarantee". Please keep in mind that this is a relatively short term test. This testing can't really give you the long term review of durability and reliability. My thoughts on the quality of this bike are from previous experiences with similar bikes. If you own this bike and have some input on the long term durability, please share your comments with the Electric Bike Report community below. Where to buy a EVELO Aurora Hub-Drive?
